| Parrot Photography by J.M. Cunha Parrots exist in a world that is all uniquely their own. A world we can only sometimes glimpse, but never hope to understand. Large parrots--African Greys, Cockatoos, Macaws, Amazons--are among the most intelligent creatures in the world. Some researchers describe them as on par with the intellect of a five year old child, in a perpetual feather-formed state of the terrible twos.
I never actually dreamed I'd ever be a photographer. Come to think of it, I never dreamed I'd ever own parrots, either. But time has brought the twists of fate for which it is notorious and alas my husband and I have acquired three greatly beloved feathered friends. To save my sanity during law school, I started taking pictures of them to share with friends and family. This hobby has grown into a keen desire to capture the essence, the beauty, the personality of each parrot and hopefully catch a glimpse of that parrot world in each photograph.
Although I hope to soon expand my subjects to include others, the pictures featured here are of my personal feathered companions. Sophia, a cockatoo, was our first parrot. We thought she should have a friend and soon after acquired Athens, the African Grey. More recently we adopted Petey, a four year old cockatoo, who had been kept in abusive conditions. He has blossomed over the past year and is just starting to show interest in posing on sets for pictures... that is, as long as Sophia is around
